BIG hood

BIG hood is great for cold winter months & can be worn both with the hood up and down - enjoy!

Pattern by Karla Bendixen - iinstagarn

See how BIG hood is constructed in the video - RIGHT HERE (I speak Danish, but it might still be helpful)

Size: onesize (adult)

Yarn: one strand of Elsa by Permin (57% wool, 43% superfine alpaca) weight 120m/50g, held together with one strand of Leonora by Permin (50% silk, 40% wool & 10% kid mohair) weight 180m/25g

Total usage: 100g (2 skeins) of Elsa by Permin & 50g (2 skeins) Leonora by Permin

Knitting tension: 12 stitches X 26 rows of garter stitch (10X10cm)

Circular needles: size 7 mm length 60 cm, as well as a smaller set of needles for the i-cord fx 3 mm

BIG hood is mostly worked back & forth in garter stitch

Pattern:

Cast on 20 stitches on circular needles 7 mm (both yarns)

Knit 39 rows (garter stitch)

Cut the yarn (DON'T bind off the 20 stitches)

Pick up 21 stitches along BOTH of the two longer sides (on each side of the 20 stitches), now you should have 62 stitches on your row

Knit 50 rows (garter stitch)

DON'T turn. Cast on 20 stitches using backwards loop cast on method. Now we will be knitting in the round (place a stitch marker here = beginning of the round). You should have 82 stitches in the round

*Knit one round purl, knit one round knit* - *repeat 3 times (so that it continues to look like garter stitch)

Knit 4 rounds (stockinette)

*Knit one round purl, knit one round knit* - *repeat 3 times (so that it looks like garter stitch again)

Knit one round like this: 5 purl, 10 knit, 32 purl, 10 knit, 25 purl

Knit one round

Knit one round like this: 5 purl, 10 knit, 32 purl, 10 knit, 25 purl

Knit one round like this: 8 knit, bind off the next 4 stitches, 38 knit, bind off the next 4 stitches, 28 knit. Cut the yarn (DON'T bind off). Slip the next 8 stitches from left to right needle – so that you have the front panel on one row.

Both front- & back panel is worked back & forth in garter stitch. Begin on the wrong side.

Rows from the wrong side begins & ends with 3 purl stitches (all stitches in between are knit)

On every other row from the right side (so every fourth row overall) knit 2 decreases like this: knit 2 stitches, knit a left leaning decrease, knit until there are 4 stitches left, knit a right leaning decrease, knit the remaining 2 stitches

Knit 14 rows like described above

Knit 3 rows of stockinette

Bind off

The stockinette edge around the face is knitted like described below, & then folded inwards

Pick up stitches all around the opening for the face (about 86 stitches)

Knit 4 rounds

On round 5/6 make 2 small holes for the i-cord. I make them by binding off 2 stitches (one for each hole) on row 5 and then casting on 2 stitches (one for each hole) on row 6 using the backwards loop cast on method. The holes should be places in the front (below the chin) with 4 stitches between them

Knit until the edge is 15 rows (stockinette) wide in total. Bend it inwards & fasten it while binding off

I-cord:

Knit a thick i-cord using ONLY the Leonora yarn. Cast on 5 stitches on 3 mm & knit until the i-cord is about 90 cm long. Loop it in, around & out the holes in the edge of the BIG hood

Weave in all ends

Congratulations on your BIG hood. BIG hood is great for cold winter months & can be worn both with the hood up & down. If you knit my BIG hood, I would love to see it:
